The day was especially poignant for members of the Bay of Plenty Philippines Society following the harrowing events of the preious week resulting from Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The society's present, Vincent Villasan told The Mud the past week had been really hard for local Filipino people, so as well as celebrating they were having an appeal for the New Zealand public.

"Fortunately for us, the New Zealanders are very generous people so we are very happy."

Globalfest 2013 offered an opportunity to showcase the 7000 islands of the Philippines in spite of all the destruction.

"Today's been really good. All our food has sold out and a lot of people are really interest [in the Philippines]."

Meanwhile, a group of Polynesian students Rotorua Boys and Girls high schools were a thrilled the crowd with a vibrant performance.
