Scrub Rotorua Day a blast as city gleams anew

They scrubbed, brushed, polished and water-blasted downtown buildings in Rotorua on Saturday 23 November as inner city building owners and business people got behind the Inner City Focus Group’s Scrub Rotorua Day.

Rotorua District Council’s Heart of the City project team backed the initiative to spruce up the city, with council workers replanting gardens and adding new areas of planting, and assisting with a pop-up exhibition area featuring art, historical photos and ideas contributed by some of the hundreds of people who flocked to the event.

Attractions also included the installation and blessing of two major street sculptures loaned by local artist Joe Kemp to kick off plans for an art and sculpture trail centred along Tutanekai Street, and a free concert throughout the day at City Focus.

City retailer Mike Steiner, who led the project, was delighted with the big local attendance and support, which he saw as the first stage of an exciting time for the city.

Mayor Steve Chadwick judged the cleanest window competition, sponsored by The Mud with a deluxe spa and mud bath prize provided by the Spa at QE; and the winner is to be announced at 4pm Monday when the Mayor will present the prize to the winning business.
