Waiheke Sea Scouts sailing away with Mason's donation
Waiheke Sea Scouts sailing away with Mason's donation.
A generous donation from the Waiheke Masons/ Mason's Potters trust of $30,000 has helped the Waiheke Island Sea Scouts to purchase 6 cadet craft for sail training, a safety boat and boat covers.
The Potters trust which was set up by a couple who didn't have any children and is administered by the Masons. The trust makes grants to worthy community groups especially those making a difference in the lives of children.
The Waiheke Sea Scouts has over 100 children at different ages and stages and every year the numbers wanting to join grow. As a voluntary organization Sea Scouts, Keas and Cubs are run by members of the community who are mostly parents wanting to support the development of young people. The Waiheke Sea Scouts Leaders state "Our aim is that as teenagers our children will see the wealth of opportunities our island paradise can offer and not its limitations. "
The donation from the Mason's will give the Scouts of Waiheke more opportunity for time on the water which is where real skills and experience is gained. Marcel Vroege a Sea Scouts leader says " This is a real boost for us to get more children sailing. We are always fundraising and appreciate the ongoing community support we receive, but a donation like this helps us immensely."
For the Free Masons of New Zealand choosing to support the Sea Scouts aligns with their aim to promote self-development, family and community values.
There will be an event this Sunday (15th of December) to celebrate and acknowledge this donation from 2 pm with BBQ and all boats on display at Shelley Beach or the Ship at Shelly Beach weather dependent.
We would like to invite all past and current Sea Scouts, and anyone interested to come along and celebrate with us.
