Wellington City Council congratulated for Living Wage steps
Wellington City Council deserves congratulations for taking a leadership role in addressing poverty and inequality by beginning to implement a living wage, the Living Wage Wellington network said today.
Council voted a short time ago to adopt the 2014/15 Annual Plan, which includes funding for implementation of the living wage to all directly employed staff by 1 July 2014.
Councillors have also made a strong commitment to progress the living wage for Council Controlled Organisation staff and last week asked officials to report back in July on how to implement the living wage for contract workers.
“Wellington City Council has made an important step in creating a more equal city and we applaud the Mayor and Councillors’ leadership on this,” said Brian Dawson, Living Wage Wellington spokesperson.
“Council’s decision this week to take parking warden services in-house is also a smart move, and will make a significant difference to hardworking and very low paid workers and their families,” he said.
Brian Dawson said Living Wage Wellington would work between now and July to ensure progress on plans to bring CCO and contract workers up to a living wage.
Ends.
