Divers
have located the fishing vessel Ayson which sank off
Stirling Point near Bluff early yesterday morning.
The
vessel was located 700 metres south of Stirling Point and
divers have sealed the fuel tank breather pipes.
Regional On Scene Commander Dallas Bradley says there may
still be some very small amounts of diesel leaking from the
vessel. “Some of the fuel that leaked yesterday before the
breather pipes were sealed has blown inshore around Stirling
Point,” he says. There is a diesel odour and a silvery
sheen on the water and Environment Southland is advising
against snorkelling in the area.
A dive team and
equipment is currently being organised with a view to
salvaging the vessel early next week.
Environment
Southland will continue to monitor the situation.
