Body found on West Coast beach

Police have recovered a body from the beach near the mouth of the Kahurangi River on the West Coast this afternoon.

The body was discovered at the high tide mark this morning by two trampers walking along the beach. Items believed to belong to the deceased person were also located.

Police have taken the body to Greymouth and are now working to identify the person and establish the cause of death.

Sergeant Brett Currie said the body is that of a male and he was wearing a wetsuit.

Formal identification may take some time.
