Esplanade river walls to be repaired

Esplanade river walls to be repaired

The wall that contains the Turanganui and the Waimata Rivers along The Esplanade is slipping and at the end of its life. Work to reconstruct the wall will start this week and is expected to take 10-12 weeks. The actual completion date will depend on the weather and favourable tides. Most of the work can only be done at low tide.

There should be no restrictions to traffic along The Esplanade but those wanting to fish along the riverbank may need to find another spot while the work is completed.

The revetment walls were installed in the mid 1970’s to support the riverbank and keep the river contained. The walls prevent erosion and safeguard riverside parks for public use.

Gisborne District Council thanks all riverbank users for their patience during this time.
