Police have released the name of the man whose body was found in an industrial area in Ashburton yesterday.

He was Arran James Gairns, aged 34, of Ashburton.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill of Ashburton Police says a post-mortem examination was carried out today on the deceased.

“The provisional findings indicate that the man has drowned,” she says.

“At this stage we are continuing to treat the death as unexplained. Investigations are continuing into how Mr Gairns came to be in the area where he was found.”

Mr Gairns’ body was found yesterday afternoon [Sunday 1 June] in a drainage run-off area behind commercial premises on West Street.
