Mid-winter Matariki Night Market in Hastings

On Thursday 26 June from 5-8pm Hastings City will transform into an exciting evening destination for the whole family as we celebrate Matariki or Māori New Year.

The Matariki Night Market brings together all the things you love about the regular Hastings City Night Market with a twist. Hastings City Business Association manager and Night Market organiser Susan McDade says Matariki is like New Zealand’s thanksgiving.

“Traditionally, Matariki is a seasonal celebration to mark the end of the harvest. It’s a time for reflection, to remember those who have passed and to celebrate new beginnings. Like any ‘new year’ or ‘thanksgiving’ celebration Matariki is a time to let your hair down and have some fun. Singing, dancing and feasting with family and friends – a concept that fits perfectly with the Night Market,” she explains.

People can expect to experience an array of performances, live entertainment, food, craft and shopping. The Kahungungu Dream Girls head the musical line-up for the night and will MC the event. They will share the stage with fellow performers including, the Karamu High School Kapa Haka group, and the fire juggling, flame breathing ‘Flaming Maniacs’.

There will be some captivating lighting displays, featuring the seven stars of Matariki, floating candles, and beautiful lighting within the trees and throughout the mall area.

All of your favourite regular Night Market vendors return for the special event, including Paella A Go Go, Berry Tub, Kiwikraft, Red Lippy, Twisted Chips, Contemporary Craft, Cameo Beauty, Pizza Guy, Hastings Henna, Crepe and Coffee and more!

“Matariki is all about getting involved, so wrap up warm and bring the family along to enjoy the food, fun and festivities, and help welcome in the Māori New Year,” says McDade.

The Night Market is held in the Hastings CBD mall, by the clock tower, performance stage and fountain.
