Stop On The Red safety campaign starts

Stop On The Red safety campaign starts

Red-light runners in Wellington City will be targeted by a new intersection safety campaign being launched this week by Wellington City Council.

Over the next few months, the ‘Stop on Red’ campaign will remind those drivers who run red lights that the risks to themselves and others are not worth it.

Paul Barker, the Council’s Safe and Sustainable Transport Manager, says red-light running is a big problem in Wellington. “On average there are 26 deaths or serious injuries resulting from crashes occurring at intersections in Wellington City every year.

“Failure to give way or stop is a factor in 25% of all crashes in Wellington in 2013. Crashes are also expensive for vehicle owners in the cost of repairs and cause traffic delays around the city.”

“This campaign will be supported with police enforcement at intersections throughout the central city,” says Jason McCarthy, Response Manager, Wellington Area Police.

People can expect to see the campaign on billboards and bus backs and hear it on the radio. Z service stations and VTNZ in the CBD are also helping to promote the Stop on Red message within their stores.
