Driving care need during strong winds overnight

The NZ Transport Agency advises drivers that care will be needed on highways and roads in Northland and Auckland due to strong winds forecast overnight.

Gusts of more than 60km/h have been recorded during the day on the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the wind is forecast to strengthen.

“We lowered the speed limit to 70km/h on the bridge this afternoon and we are advising motorcyclists and the drivers of high sided vehicles to avoid the bridge altogether if possible,” says the Transport Agency’s Regional Journey Manager, Jacqui Hori-Hoult.

“Motorway drivers should also be aware of others around them and the increased risk of wind gusts affecting the stability of vehicles. We encourage drivers to lower their speed limits and increase following distances for safer travel,’ says Ms Hori-Hoult.

The Transport Agency says there have been several reports of fallen trees and branches, particularly in Northland.

“We and our contractors are working with emergency services and local authorities to keep highways and roads open.

“There may be an increased risk from storm debris in isolated areas and road users should always be alert to an unexpected hazard that may be just around the corner,” Ms Hori-Hoult says.
