Escaped Prisoner on the Loose in Opotiki

Police in Opotiki are searching for a man who escaped from a van while in transit between Waikeria Prison and the Opotiki District court.

The man escaped from a van in the vicinity of Church Street Opotiki at about 10am.

He is described as a Male Maori aged 21 years. he is 177 cm tall and of medium build. When he escaped he was wearing orange prison overalls, but is now believed to be shirtless and wearing only a pair of shorts. He has a tattoo on his back.

Polcie have set up cordons and a police dog is being used in the search.

Anyone seeing the fugitive should not approach him but call Police on 11.
