Police appeal for information after hit and run

Whanganui Police are appealing for public help in locating the driver of a car involved in a hit and run yesterday evening (Monday 29 September, 2014) which left a motorcyclist with serious injuries.

At about 10:40pm a motorcyclist was travelling east on Pitt Street when a car travelling north on Liverpool Street collided with them at an intersection.

Emergency services attended however the driver of the car fled the scene of the crash without ascertaining if the motorcyclist was injured or not. The male motorcyclist was flung across the road from the force of the crash and suffered serious injuries. He was transported by ambulance to the Whanganui Hospital and is in a stable condition.

The car was described as a black sedan with dark windows, 1990's model or later. It was last seen travelling north on Liverpool Street before turning left onto Halswell Street towards St Johns Hill.

Constable Robert Parsons of the Whanganui Police says: "We are appealing for the driver to come forward as well as any witnesses to the crash."

"The car would likely have received moderate damage to the front left corner as a result of the crash, and the impact of the crash would have been so large that it would have been impossible for the driver of the car not to notice. The motorcyclist is extremely lucky to still be alive and not suffer more serious injuries."

"If anyone has any information about the crash please contact us immediately."
