Drop out at Waipiro Road Closed

A massive drop out on Waipiro Road affecting 100m of roadway at Taitai hill has occurred overnight.

As a result contractors have closed the road this morning and begun stabilisation and repair work.

“This is a historic earthflow site 2km along Waipiro Road, this period of ongoing wet weather has reactivated the slip.” Says Dave Hadfield, General Manager Tairawhiti Roads, Gisborne District Council.

Council urges road users to obey warning signs near the site, while contractors work to open the road.

“Contractors should hopefully have at least one lane open by the end of the day today.” Says Dave Hadfield.
