Kids pitch in to clean up reserve

Bethlehem Primary School children will be getting stuck in to pick up rubbish in Tauranga’s Gordon Carmichael Reserve next week.
The clean-up, on Friday 17 October, is as part of the Communities for Clean Water campaign organised by the New Zealand Landcare Trust, and supported by Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Tauranga City Council, Downer, Tauranga Envirohub and Bethlehem Coachlines.
It launches the campaign’s ‘Weekend of Action’, with 170 students taking part alongside neighbours and other volunteers. Anyone can take part in the clean-up to remove rubbish, car tyres, plastic bottles and other rubbish.
Chair of the Regional Council’s Regional Direction and Delivery Committee Paula Thompson said that on the day the students will learn more about sustainability and their local environment before heading off to collect rubbish. They’ll enjoy a barbecue lunch afterwards.
She said the Communities for Clean Water campaign encouraged people to take an active interest in projects and activities that contribute to maintaining and restoring waterways.
“During the Weekend of Action next weekend a series of events will take place around the country promoting the issues affecting water quality, and removing rubbish from around the reserves is one way we can remove one source of pollution.”
