Committee receives update on future waste services
Auckland Council’s Regional Strategy and Policy Committee received updates yesterday on progress to deliver enhanced and improved waste services to Aucklanders.
The first of two reports advised on the Resource Recovery Network, which is a core project in the council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP), with a long-term goal to provide recycling hubs in communities across the region.
The first community recycling centre will open in Waiuku in November, with a number of others being developed with community partners. A total of 12 sites have been identified for the network.
Infrastructure and Environmental Services General Manager John Dragicevich says: “Significant progress has been made to ensure that over time this network will play an essential role in reducing waste to landfill, and provide significant benefits to local communities by creating jobs, training and business opportunities.”
The second report was an update of the current WMMP work programme including implementation phasing and communications and engagement work to prepare communities for new services.
The current focus was on encouraging Aucklanders to
get better at recycling and communities had already
responded positively to the campaign.
A small amount of
feedback received had asked if recycling services were
changing – but a planned move to a consistent recycling
service across the region is not happening yet.
“Some people have said they are unsure, so we want to be clear – there are no changes to recycling services at this time. We’re taking steps to get this message out and will continue to do so in appropriate channels,” said Mr Dragicevich.
