Armed Carjackers captured - Mangere Bridge

"Armed Carjackers captured - Mangere Bridge - Counties Manukau"

Police have arrested two men and are searching for a third after an airborne pursuit by the police helicopter Eagle and an attempted carjacking in Mangere Bridge this afternoon.

At about 1:10 pm a police patrol making enquiries in the Clendon Park area saw a suspicious car with three occupants, one of whom was seen with a sawn-off shotgun.

The car sped off at high speed but the police patrol was unable to follow.

Shortly afterwards the police helicopter crew spotted the car and tracked it from the air as it drove to the Mangere Bridge area.

The car stopped and the two occupants abandoned it.

At the corner of Church Street and Coronation Road they attempted to carjack a passing car.

One man pointed the sawn-off shotgun at the driver while another moved to open the car door.

The driver did not stop, and sped off, leaving the two men on the street.

They ran off on foot and were apprehended shortly afterwards by police ground units.

A loaded shotgun and a pistol were located nearby.

Police are still seeking the third person who was seen in the car at Clendon. No one was injured during the incident.

The two men are being interviewed by Counties Manukau police, before a decision is made on possible charges.

The member of the public who was threatened with the shotgun subsequently contacted police and is also being spoken to.
