Auckland Council welcomes new cadets
Eleven young
people will get a helping hand in their careers when they
embark upon Auckland Council’s new Cadet Programme this
week.
The programme is designed for motivated job seekers who may find it hard to secure sustainable employment due to a lack of qualifications or experience. The cadet programme combines paid work experience with development opportunities that may include gaining a recognised qualification.
The cadets will work in departments including the Mayor’s Office, Parks, Sports & Recreation, Libraries, Customer Services, Community Development, Arts & Culture (CDAC), and the Research, Investigations and Monitoring Unit (RIMU).
Auckland Council Chief Executive Stephen Town says: “I’m delighted to welcome eleven motivated and talented young people to our organisation. We are serious about developing young Aucklanders and providing them with meaningful opportunities.
“Following on from the success of our Graduate Programme, the Cadet Programme is great opportunity to bring fresh, diverse talent to Auckland Council, while supporting our young people into satisfying careers.”
As part of Career Pathways, the Cadet Programme aligns with the Auckland Plan and The Southern Initiative by focussing on supporting high priority groups – young unemployed, Māori and Pacific people – into jobs that are supplemented with training or a tertiary qualification.
The programme was designed with input from employment providers, tertiary institutions, schools, government agencies and young people.
The Cadet Programme launch follows the second year of the Graduate Programme with next year’s intake of 46 graduates coming on board in February 2015.
