New Zealand Coastal Society Conference

New Zealand Coastal Society Conference

Rere ki Uta, Rere ki Tai – From Land to Sea: 2014 NZCS Annual Conference

The New Zealand Coastal Society will be hosting its 22nd annual conference in Raglan from 18 to 21 November 2014.

Keynote speakers for the event include Donna-marie Audas, Manager of Coastal Ecosystems, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority; Angeline Greensill, M?ori political rights campaigner, academic and community leader; and Dr Doug Booth from the University of Otago’s School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences who researches the political and cultural aspects of sport.

There will be three streams of oral presentations on most days and an interactive poster session during the breaks. The conference will also feature four panel discussions on marine resource extraction, harbour and catchment management issues, coastal community infrastructure, and coastal hazards management.

Again this year, an important part of the conference will be the field trips. Attendees will be able to choose to attend one of the following field trips: 1) Visit vital parts of Raglan’s coastal watershed and meet with a representative from the award-winning Whaingaroa Harbour Care Group. 2) Take a walking tour along Whaingaroa Harbour foreshore to learn from local experts about issues of social, historical and environmental significance.

An IPENZ technical group, the New Zealand Coastal Society is a multidisciplinary organisation that includes coastal planners, engineers, scientists, and others with an interest in the coastal environment. As such, the annual conference offers an opportunity to learn more about some of the innovative work being done around the country, as well as discuss some of greatest challenges facing our coastal environment, including the impacts of climate change.
