Gisborne woman’s big win leads to the Big Apple

Gisborne woman’s big win leads to the Big Apple

A Gisborne woman is heading off to the bright lights of New York City for the trip of a lifetime after winning $600,000 with Lotto Strike Four.

Despite watching the live Lotto draw on Saturday night, the winner had no idea she had won until she checked her ticket at her local Lotto store on Monday morning.

“I was just checking my tickets as I usually do, but this time it jammed up the terminal. I jokingly said to the lady ‘have I won millions?’

“The Lotto lady shook her head and said ‘not quite, but almost – you’ve certainly won a lot of money!’” the winner laughed.

“It was such a beautiful thing to be told.”

The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, already has some big plans about how to celebrate, including splashing out on a dream holiday to the United States.

“My partner and I haven’t ever travelled beyond Australia, and the States is somewhere we’ve always wanted to visit – so now we’re off to New York City!

“We might just have to swing by Vegas on the way and get hitched,” joked the winner. “Wouldn’t that be a trip to remember!”

But it’s not just the trip of a lifetime that the winner will be ticking off her bucket-list thanks to the win.

“I’ll be able to achieve another long-time dream – owning my own home. I can’t wait to finally hold the keys to that house we’ve been dreaming of for so many years.”

The winning ticket was sold at House of Gifts & Lotto in Gisborne.

Meanwhile, Lotto is looking for two other lucky Strike players, with $600,000 Strike Four prizes still unclaimed in both Oamaru and Auckland.

The winning Oamaru ticket was purchased at Paper Plus Oamaru and the Auckland ticket was purchased at Meadowlands Lotto. The tickets shared the Strike Four jackpot of $1.2 million in the 6 September draw.

Anyone who bought their ticket from any of the above winning stores should write their name on the back of the ticket and check it immediately at any Lotto outlet, online at mylotto.co.nz or through the Lotto NZ ticket-checker app.

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
