Horowhenua art and asparagus celebrated at upcoming event

The spring-time flavour of asparagus and the talents of Horowhenua artists will once again be celebrated at an upcoming annual event in Horowhenua.

Taste of Asparagus at Tendertips opens on Friday 31 October with an evening art exhibition opening, followed by public open days including a cafe at the Tendertips pack-house on Saturday and Sunday. The art exhibition continues until Sunday 9 November and features works by painter Jill Brandon, wood carver Dave Brandon, milliner Angelika Kieninger, woodcut printer Josef Eugou Kieninger, and pastel painter Jane Ross.

Organiser Catherine Lewis says the event celebrates the talents of local artists and creates opportunity for them to showcase and sell their works. It is also a charity fundraiser with all proceeds from the $25 ticket sales to the exhibition opening and 10 percent of all artwork sales being donated to Arohanui Hospice.

"While this event does promote asparagus also, we hope the concept will ignite interest amongst other local food producers to support the prospect of launching a future ‘Taste of Horowhenua Festival', celebrating the local produce of the District - in combination with art and music."

To purchase tickets for the art exhibition opening on Friday 31 October from 5.30pm to 7pm, visit the asparagus pack-house shop at Tendertips, 747 SH1, just north of Levin's township, or email art@tendertips.co.nz. A Jill Brandon painting will be up for raffle during the evening, with $5 raffle tickets available and the painting on display at the pack-house shop.

The weekend open days on Saturday 1 November and Sunday 2 November are from 9:00am to 3.00pm.

"People can come along to view the art, tour the asparagus pack-house and enjoy a coffee and some freshly-cooked asparagus-inspired cuisine, salads and sweet treats for purchase at our Packhouse Café. We'll have some non-asparagus options on offer too, of course," Mrs Lewis said.
