Fatal Crash on Memorial Ave

Christchurch Police can confirm there is one fatality resulting from a serious crash that occurred on Memorial Ave at approximately 10.20pm last night (17 October 2014).

Two vehicles were damaged as a result of the crash, 1 person was found deceased at the scene and five other people from the two vehicles were taken to Christchurch Hospital, two of them with serious injuries. The sole occupant of the second vehicle has been discharged from hospital this morning.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

Police are currently working to ensure that next of kin are fully informed and will not release any details of the deceased person until this process has been completed.

Canterbury’s Serious Crash Unit attended the scene last night and Police investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing. Early indications based on the scene examination suggest that speed may have played a role in this crash.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or saw a silver Hyundai station wagon driving along Memorial Ave last night at around 10-10.20pm to contact them on 03 363 7400.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
