"Victim of fatal crash on Memorial Ave named"

Christchurch Police can confirm the victim of Friday’s (17 October 2014) fatal crash on Memorial Ave was 19 year old Mereana Tirri DOBSON from Christchurch.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

Miss DOBSON was a back seat passenger in a silver Hyundai station wagon that was travelling in a 60kmph speed zone towards the city when it collided with a Mitsubishi travelling in the opposite direction. Police can confirm that the two vehicles were not racing each other.

Miss DOBSON’s father says “It is tragic for parents to be waiting for their kids to come home and when you find out why they’re not coming home it’s really hard. On behalf of our family I’d like to request privacy while we work through our shock and grief and ask that media do not approach us for any further comment.”

The sole occupant of the Mitsubishi suffered minor injuries and was discharged from hospital on Saturday. One of the passengers of the Hyundai was released from hospital over the weekend after suffering moderate injuries in the crash. The three other people from the Hyundai remain in hospital, two in a critical condition and one in a serious but stable condition.

Police investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or saw a silver Hyundai station wagon driving along Memorial Ave on Friday (17 October 2014) night at around 10-10.20pm to contact them on 03 363 7400.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
