Summer of Fun returns for its fourth year

Summer of Fun returns for its fourth year

Summer of Fun, a series of free community events, is returning to Christchurch for its fourth year.

This summer’s programme includes more than 60 events, ranging from family pool parties to Carols in the Square, which are organised and run by community organisations, churches and residents’ groups and supported by the local councils.

The Summer of Fun series was created in response to a need to provide communities with local, fun events in their neighbourhoods following the 2011 earthquakes.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority Chief Executive Roger Sutton says Summer of Fun events are a great opportunity for greater Christchurch residents to enjoy the summer while connecting locally.

“We knew that after the earthquakes, communities would need events like this. It’s a chance for people to get out and have a bit of fun with their families, friends and neighbours while taking a break from issues they’re facing,” says Mr Sutton.

“These events have helped and continue to help people get to know their neighbours and have let groups build stronger ties. It will be great to see local communities continue these good things in the summers to come.”

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust provided a grant of $400,000 to fund the events over both the 2013/14 and 2014/15 summers while CERA is supporting groups to run, co-ordinate and promote events.
