Welcome to the long weekend
Welcome to the long weekend
Labour weekend is the traditional Coromandel welcome to the best time of the year for the best holiday destination in New Zealand and it kicks off with style!
We've got adventure racing, a bike festival, bathtub racing, exhibitions, a home and trade show, a twilight spa night and fabulous markets from Thames all the way around the Coromandel.
Scroll to the bottom for a tasty selection of event treats you can mix and match to suit your mood.
Kerbside
Collection changes
Kerbside collections will be a day later next week because Monday is a public holiday.
If you're new to the Coromandel, Kerbside collections are bumped to a day later for the week straight after a long weekend.
Recycling will be on the week 1 schedule next week.
Please have your Wheelie Bin and Glass Crate at the kerb by 7:30am on the day of your collection.
If you miss your collection or plan to leave town before collection day, please drop your official blue bag and recycling at your local refuse transfer station FREE of charge. (You must have all rubbish in official blue bags to be accepted free of charge by our transfer stations.)
A year of Kerbside
success
One year after launching our new Kerbside rubbish and recycling collection across three councils, over half of everything we put out on the street is being recycled.
Before we launched Kersbide, we had limited recycling facilities in the Coromandel, but we're now recycling 55% of the total Kerbside waste collection in the Coromandel.
But we can do better. Remember, only put plastic, cans, paper and cans into your black wheelie bins. Glass goes in the green crates. Whatever goes in the blue bags goes straight into landfill.
Food waste is an area that we can focus on to make a massive reduction in waste. Why not get a composter? There are small ones that fit under the kitchen sink. You can use the results in your gardens or donate them to schools or community gardens.
Refuse Transfer Stations open late
over Labour Weekend
Most of our Refuse Transfer Stations will be open late on Monday.

Surf Lifesavers out in force from this weekend
Traditionally, the Surf Life Saving patrol season begins at Labour Weekend and continues through to Easter.
As the country gears up for Labour Weekend, Surf Life Saving New Zealand is strongly encouraging people to be vigilant when heading to the beach.
“The beach is New Zealand's favourite playground but it can also be a dangerous place. Learning about the risks and preparing yourself will mean you can enjoy the sun, sea and sand safely this summer,” says SLSNZ CEO Paul Dalton.
“Make sure you are choosing a patrolled beach (details at www.findabeach.co.nz) where you can swim between the flags and feel safe in the knowledge there are highly skilled lifeguards on hand,” he says.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand encourages beach goers to adhere to a few simple rules. Be prepared, watch out for yourself and others, be aware of the dangers and know your limits.
