Ferry Road, triangle near CPIT, between Williams St and St Asaph closed 28 October citybound

No northwest/ city-bound traffic along this short city segment of Ferry Road on Tuesday, 28 October.

Durham St, central city, Bealey Ave end

One lane only south of Bealey Ave on Durham St from 28 October for a week, while SCIRT’s Fletcher team is working along Salisbury St on final wastewater repairs and road patching. Consider other streets at peak hours. http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/work/activity/5746 .

Fitzgerald Ave, east side of road between Tuam and St Asaph
, one lane removed

From Wednesday, 29 October, for six weeks, SCIRT’s City Care team is rebuilding the road in this block. There will be no entrance to Tuam St East off Fitzgerald for three weeks. Two lanes will be available with one lane removed in two stages over the six weeks.

Linwood Ave going south, Aldwins and Buckleys intersection/ Eastgate corner

The three lanes on Linwood Ave heading south-east were reduced to just one this week, creating significant backlogs of traffic. http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/article/linwood-ave-apologies-for-unexpected-delays

A wastewater trench has to be dug from the corner back to opposite Hereford St in the next five weeks. However, traffic managers and crews will be working hard to ease up the situation at this intersection and the Cashel St corner in the next two to three weeks. Thanks to everyone who has chosen a different way home this week and eased congestion. http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/work/activity/5799

Linwood – Aldwins Road/ Marlborough St intersection

A lane will be closed on Aldwins Road at the Marlborough St intersection travelling north for three days from Thursday, 30 October. Work on Marlborough St itself will take five days from 28 October.

http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/work/activity/5826

Avonside/ Wainoni – Kerrs Road one-way extending to Ottawa Road 28 October

The second stage of SCIRT’s McConnell Dowell wastewater work begins 28 October on Kerrs Road, the southern part of Wainoni Road, linking to Woodham Road. This work will last into the New Year.

• The one-way system heading north will extend all the way from Woodham Road to Ottawa Road.

• Southbound drivers will be detoured onto Breezes Road or Ottawa Road.

• There are several reasons for the lengthy one-way: so drivers have a clear detour route onto Ottawa Road and don’t have to do a u-turn near a work site and also because Cuffs Road has no right hand turn onto Pages Road.

• Early in November work will start on the roundabout at Kerrs and Woodham.

Please try to remember your local business owners who are affected by this work and walk the extra distance to keep them going.

Shirley, Hills Road – top end north of Acheson Ave northbound only for two weeks

People who drive south on Hills Road to town from Briggs Road or the Mairehau High School end of Hills Road will need to change practices from Tuesday, 28 October for about two weeks. Detours will be in place for southbound drivers from Dawe St to Acheson Ave. Northbound only from Acheson Ave/Whitehall St to Dawe St.

Moorhouse Ave – overpumping on the footpath between Montreal and Durham

Work on the brick barrel wastewater main pipe has been postponed until February next year following a meeting with the businesses in this area. However, overpumping using a temporary pipe is needed until then along the footpath. Please be on the lookout for restrictions at Durham St and Montreal St. Some parking will be available where the crew is not operating. http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/work/activity/5790

St Asaph St, two blocks, intersection with Montreal

Watch for restrictions at the Montreal St intersection. Drivers crossing town via St Asaph may have delays with one lane reduced on St Asaph St. SCIRT’s Downer crews will be patch repairing the middle of the road in two places - between Fitzgerald Ave and Barbadoes St and between Colombo and Durham. As this work is in the middle of the road there will be traffic management in place. This work may take another fortnight to complete.

Shirley Road/ Warrington St at Hills Road – ongoing roading work

Drivers may have another week of delays in this busy corner, travelling towards The Palms, where lanes are restricted. Five to ten minute delays at peak hours. See the yellow area “future work” on the map in this overview work notice. http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/work/activity/4869

Aranui, Shortland St – two days one way

As part of its vacuum wastewater installations, SCIRT’s Fletcher team is investigating where pipes are located using water excavation along Shortland St from midday Tuesday 28 October to midday Thursday 30 October. The street will be one way westbound between Breezes Road and Ariel Place. Please take care exiting your driveway.

Burwood – Reginald and Vivian Streets

Seven months work on the wastewater pipes starts 28 October. The lift stations on Vivian St are almost completed by SCIRT’s Downer team. See the work notice for the stages of this work which will mainly affect residents and close some roads and intersections at different times.http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/work/activity/5789

Linwood/ Charleston - Ensors/ Aldwins Road

Expect delays due to a reduction to just one lane travelling north from the Ensors Road/ Ferry Road intersection onto Aldwins Road past Linwood College. Work will move in segments to Harrow St, the traffic lights past Linwood College, between now and the end of the year. The road itself, kerb, channel and footpath will be repaired.

Aranui –Carters Road

Traffic management has been removed and this work on the vacuum wastewater systems is postponed. SCIRT’s Fletcher team will keep residents updated.

Ferrymead - Humphreys Drive/ Ferry Road – delay until mid November, one day work 1 November

The work on Humphreys Drive is coming to an end but the Ferry Road work has been delayed until 17 November. Coming up Saturday, 1 November, Ferry Road, Ferrymead end

Ferry Road will have a one-way closure at Charlesworth St, Ferrymead – more information week starting28 October.

Update McCormacks Bay Road work

The new parking area is completed on the city side of Main Road/McCormacks Bay Road new intersection. Good for the weekend Farmers Market and people shopping on Soleares Ave. The crew replacing the gravity wastewater pipe is working from the McCormacks pump station, opposite Aratoro Place, towards Soleares Ave. Another crew will follow repairing the storm water, kerb and channel and the road surface, aiming to reopen McCormacks Bay Road to two-way traffic to Soleares Ave by Christmas.

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
