Beach Road design information day

Auckland Council is holding an information day on Saturday 1 November to share design concepts for the second stage of the Beach Road walking and cycling project, which will regenerate the Beach Road street environment. It will encourage and provide a safe and convenient route for cyclists and pedestrians to access the city centre.

The first stage involving the installation of a 1.5km separated cycleway and associated landscaping was completed in September 2014 and was delivered by Auckland Transport. The second stage incorporates an extended cycleway and enhanced public realm improvements. The project will be jointly funded and delivered by Auckland Transport and Auckland Council with $1.5 million from the City Centre Targeted Rate contributing towards the $3.5m total cost. The City Centre targeted rate is a special rate that all city businesses pay to fund improvements to streets, parks and plazas.

The Stage Two design will feature high quality paving, wider footpaths, and increased use of coastal native species to reflect the Beach Road’s heritage as a historic shore side route. Key design elements include:

• planting to reflect the area’s coastal setting

• paving designs that highlight the separated and shared path environments

• feature lighting to highlight the majestic trees and new street furniture

• a celebration of the area’s historic features.
