Grand re-opening for Rawene heritage gem

Hokianga locals turned out in force recently to celebrate the opening of a Rawene heritage landmark after months of refurbishment and restoration.

Owners of the Category 2 Ferry House (formerly Andrewes Store), Linda Blincko and Lynn Lawton of Devonport in Auckland, have transformed what many thought was a candidate for demolition into a beautiful community art space.

“It’s brilliant to see the building restored and in use,” says Linda.

“Initially we were overwhelmed by its vastness especially when our builder, Malcolm Kildare, cleared out the inside. Our challenge was to make the building functional and contemporary while respecting its history. It’s been an exciting and edifying process – and thanks must go to the Hokianga community for their enthusiasm, and to Malcolm for his meticulous work and problem-solving skills.”

Watching the iconic building regain its rightful place as a centre for the community has been a highlight.

“It’s incredible how familiar Auckland people are with Rawene, and the Ferry House in particular. There is a real affinity for the Hokianga in Auckland and great goodwill towards the project,” says Linda.

“The Depot Artspace in Devonport, where we work, has to consciously maintain a sense of place and identity despite urbanisation and other pressures. The Hokianga has its challenges but still ‘knows itself’ through its deeply felt relationships and history. Auckland has a lot to learn from this.”

An exhibition entitled Flag It! will feature from November 22 to December 11 including designs for a new Aotearoa-New Zealand flag, followed by a Christmas show – an awhi [embrace] – featuring work from Hokianga and Depot artists.

“We’re also open to what the community wants to use the space for and are keen to receive ideas and proposals,” says Linda.
