Liquor licence shutdown

Liquor licence shutdown

All applications for alcohol licences for events in December and January must be lodged by 21 November at the latest to be processed in time for the holiday period.

A statutory shut down period for liquor licensing country wide, means the District Licensing Committee will not be considering applications during the period 20 December to 15 January.

Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, all applications must be made at least 20 working days before the event is held.

“Many applicants are not aware of the 20 day rule and in the past applications have not been received in time.” Says Sarwan Kumar, regulatory services manager.

Under the Act, a 'working day' does not include weekends, statutory holidays or any day from 20 December and 15 January (inclusive). Special licences for funerals can still be made on a case-by-case basis.

“Owners or managers of any business or venue where alcohol will be sold or supplied, will need to be familiar with the laws and regulations that apply to alcohol.” Says Sarwan Kumar.

To sell or supply alcohol, vendors must apply for the appropriate alcohol licence.

“You must ensure that you have the correct licence and a host responsibility programme in place to care for your patrons”.

Each licence has its own application form, non-refundable fees and requirements for specific additional documentation.

“People may still contact council to discuss their needs if they miss application close-off dates.” Says Sarwan Kumar.

Liquor license forms and fees are available on council’s website - http://www.gdc.govt.nz/alcohol-license-forms-and-fees/
