A new merchandise range celebrating Auckland’s people and places went on sale today as the city gears up to celebrate its 175th anniversary in 2015.

The range includes a selection of some of Auckland’s earliest photographic images, iconic landmarks, heritage maps, and a range of products bearing the Auckland ‘A’ brand.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) in partnership with Auckland Libraries and online apparel retailer Mr Vintage have launched the collection – which includes t-shirts, mugs, bags, tea towels and hoodies.

ATEED’s Chief Executive, Brett O’Riley says the new online store offers a unique retail opportunity for Aucklanders to share their pride in the city, as well as souvenirs for visitors.

“We’ve engaged with an established apparel and gift retailer, Mr Vintage.co.nz, to produce the heritage collection along with other Auckland branded merchandise,” says Brett O’Riley.

“Aucklanders can also look forward to seeing new merchandise designed for other events such as Pasifika and Auckland Lantern Festival. Over time the online store has significant growth potential offering new sources of revenue for Auckland Council,” says Mr O’Riley.

The Auckland Heritage Collection range showcases archived photos and maps of Auckland city, all of which are available online through Auckland Libraries' Heritage images database.

The selected photographs are by Auckland photographer Henry Winkelmann, and depict Edwardian Auckland, the waterfront and city centre in the early years of the 20th century.

Auckland Libraries’ Iain Sharp says Henry Winkelmann was a meticulous recorder of Auckland’s changing streetscape.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to share Winkelmann’s work and of course entice people to delve into the collection themselves,” says Mr Sharp.

“About 200,000 images are currently available online through Auckland Libraries' Heritage images database.”

The range is priced from $25.00, inclusive of GST. An additional $5 delivery charge will be added for postage and packaging.
