Youth of Coromandel Targeted in Council Project
Youth of Coromandel Targeted in Council Project
We're setting up a Value for Youth project, which will incorporate youth groups, businesses and our Council staff. This has gained momentum following the adoption of our Youth Strategy last year.
The strategy aims to bring agencies together to share information and identify and eliminate gaps in service provision for our young people and to identify and create opportunities for youth in the district.
One such gap is in the volunteering sector. We're now training a group of lead volunteers between 12 and 24 years of age who will be a lead group to train other young people from around the Coromandel.
"We really want our young people to know that we value their input and they are an important part of our community," says Council' Project lead Marlene Perry. "A mentoring programme is an inspirational way for young people to see what their peers are doing around the Coromandel."
We selected a core starter group with help from networks around the Coromandel. Some of the group are youth volunteers working with the Fire service, SPCA and St John, or are involved in sport coaching or working with DOC in a variety of projects.
They'll also provide a best practice focus in the volunteer community. Best practice includes making sure organisations who offer volunteer positions provide role descriptions and carry out background checks.
