Traffic and unlawful takings at A&P show

The Canterbury A&P Show starts tomorrow and Police urge everyone to plan ahead, prepare for heavy traffic and think safety when they leave their home and vehicles to attend the show.

Opportunistic burglaries and car break-ins tend to increase during Cup and Show Week and cars parked at the show are often targeted.

Canterbury Police’s Deployment Manager, Inspector Peter Cooper, says “Unfortunately while the majority of people attend the show for all the right reasons, some offenders take advantage of the crowds to target people’s belongings. Homes, vehicles, motels and other accommodation can be an easy target if you haven’t locked doors/windows and secured valuables out of sight.”

“Don’t leave temptation in the window or anything outside that could be used to break into your car, home or accommodation. If you’re staying in a motel or hotel always use the safe as thieves often know where to look for jewellery and cash.”

If you are driving to the show or racing events during Cup and Show Week don’t leave valuables on display and always secure your vehicle’s doors and windows. Make sure you have a sober driver in your travel plans or use public transport or car/taxi share. If you notice any suspicious activity always report it to Police as soon as possible and remember you can dial *555 from your mobile phone to report unsafe driving.

“Car parks and show grounds will be patrolled regularly by Police and community patrols to deter break-ins and keep a look out for any suspicious activity” explains Inspector Cooper. “Allow enough time for your journey, particularly on Canterbury Day on Friday, be patient and plan stops if you’re travelling further afield for the long weekend”

Police will be monitoring alcohol and related crime and disorder around the city this week, particularly on Thursday and Friday night. Patrols will enforce liquor bans and visit licensed premises and drink drive checkpoints will be set up around the city.

Canterbury Police hope everyone remembers Cup and Show Week for the right reasons.
