Kia Māia te Whai an adventure for young readers

Auckland Council’s free ‘Dare to Explore’ summer reading adventure has introduced Te Reo to the programme.

Dare to Explore – Kia Māia te Whai in Te Reo – encourages children to take an adventurous approach to reading and council libraries have seen great support for this approach since it started in 2011, says Auckland Libraries General Manager Allison Dobbie.

"For 2014, we are very excited about introducing a bilingual component to the programme. Kura Kaupapa Māori at Mangere told us last year that the school, and community, would like the programme to be in Māori,” she says.

Kura Kaupapa Māori is a Maori language immersion programme in primary schools. Some libraries are working closely with their local Kura Kaupapa to encourage whole classrooms to take on all eight challenges in Te Reo.

Auckland Libraries will be at the Kapa Haka regionals at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori A Rohe O Mangere on Saturday 15 November and will share information about the upcoming Dare to Explore programme. The theme for this year is ‘Out of this World’. Through the event, children will also be encouraged to join the library.

For more information visit Auckland Libraries Dare to Explore. The programme runs from Monday 8 December 2014 to Thursday 18 January 2015.
