Gisborne: Upgrades Underway for Pools
Upgrades that deferred the seasonal opening of the outdoor pools at the Olympic Pool Complex are on track to be completed within the next three weeks.
“A condition assessment that was carried out in preparation for scoping of the 2018 redevelopment identified some issues that required attention before opening this summer,” says planning and development group manager, Nedine Thatcher-Swann.
Work is being carried out on filtration and piping, with upgraded equipment being installed and some pools ready for use as early as 28 November.
“The toddler’s pool is being refitted with new filtration systems that will allow better management of the pool,” says Ms Thatcher-Swann.
“Several shade sails are already in and extensive paint work will have the pools looking revived and sun safe.”
The therapy pool that has been closed until the complete redevelopment, is being refitted for the interim and will re-open for bookings.
“Work completed on time will mean these pools can be opened by the end of November.”
The 33m outdoor pool will have new piping installed between the pool and the plant room and a new balance tank constructed to run both the 33m and 50m pools separately.
Work is scheduled to be complete and the 33m outdoor pool reopened in the first week of December.
“Council recognise the disruption caused to pool users but we believe these upgrades will add value to the user experience and will achieve more fit for purpose, quality facilities,” says Ms Thatcher-Swann.
Costs of this series of upgrades is likely to total around $210,000.
Planning for the larger scale redevelopments will begin in early 2015 for the Long Term Plan.
“We will be asking the community to make submissions to consider for the next planning phase in early February.”
