Sell-out crowd expected for ‘Cup Day’ at Riccarton tomorrow

Ticket sales are at record levels ahead of tomorrow’s 151st running of the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton Park Racecourse.

As of this morning, limited tickets remain for the Christchurch Casino NZ Cup and New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas Day, which promises to be a thrilling wrap-up of New Zealand Cup and Show Week’s events.

Christchurch City Council Events Development Manager Richard Attwood says the highly anticipated race day will likely see a sell-out crowd.

“Ticket sales for Saturday have spiked significantly as people have been looking forward to the long weekend’s line-up of exciting events,” says Mr Attwood.

“People really want to capture the magic of the festival and enjoy Saturday as a special send-off for another fantastic New Zealand Cup and Show Week,” he says.

Originally called the Canterbury Jockey Club Cup, the New Zealand Cup is one of the oldest and most popular races in New Zealand, having been run each year since 1865 and twice in 1870.

“You don’t need to be a race-day veteran to enjoy ‘Cup Day’ at Riccarton,” adds Mr Attwood.

“Many people come for the thrill of the races and stay for the spectacular trackside atmosphere and entertainment throughout the day. It’s a very special occasion.”

Also special is this year’s guest judge for Riccarton’s Fashion in the Field competition – Oscar-nominated Kiwi actress Keisha Castle-Hughes.

Keisha will spend ‘Cup Day’ judging the hotly contested Fashion in the Field and taking in the incredible race-day atmosphere that Riccarton Park has to offer.
