Show Day a hit with Canterbury crowds
Exhibitors are packing up and animals are being prepped to head home for a well-earned rest. The Canterbury A&P Show has come to an end for another year.
Organisers are waiting to confirm final numbers for the day but anticipate an overall crowd of 100,000+ despite some colder weather on the Wednesday and Thursday of the Show.
Show Day culminated with the prize all exhibitors vie for – the Supreme Champion Animal of Show. Penni Loffhagen from Tawhai Stud in Hawarden took out the honours with her Suffolk Ram. The breeder was John Miles of Coleford Stud in Lyndhurst.
From 80 entries Paul Gardner of Ashburton won the overall award in the Mint Lamb Competition with his Texel lamb. Entries in the competition were judged for best overall yield before being tender tested at Lincoln University and then taste tested at the Canterbury A&P Show.
Cam Bray from PGG Wrightson was named as the best young auctioneer in the country after he impressed judges at the Heartland Bank Young Auctioneer Competition. The 26 year old from Darfield was competing for his third year in a row. A close second went to 24 year old Tristan Gordon from Dannevirke.
Thirty-two year old Patrick Newton from Mudbrick Winery was crowned as the first ever Riedel New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year during a ceremony on the Thursday night of the Show. The competition is held in association with the Canterbury A&P Show.
Other awards announced during the Canterbury A&P Show included the Dakins Ambassador of the Year which was awarded to Arnold van Asch. The Ambassador award honours a competitor who has been seen to support the ideals of the Canterbury A&P Association. Arnold has been a member of the association and exhibiting his South Devon cattle for 45 years.
The 2014 Show Legend, recognising volunteer effort, was awarded to Kelvyn Scott from the Shearing Committee. Kelvyn has been actively involved in the shearing committee for 16 years and has spent the last ten years serving as Chairman.
Trade Exhibitor of the Year Awards were also announced on Wednesday evening with Urban Paving taking out the Supreme Champion title.
