No tsunami threat from east coast earthquake this morning

We expect no Tsunami threat from the 6.7 earthquake that occurred off Te Araroa this morning.

Te Araroa is north of Opotiki and Gisborne, on the East Coast of the North Island.

Just after 11:30 this morning, there was a magnitude 6.7 earthquake (still provisional information at this stage) 100km east of Te Araroa, 33km down.

The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) has assessed the information with the assistance of scientific advisors. Based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a threat to New Zealand.
