Nominations open on Monday for Mayoral candidates

Nominations open on Monday for Mayoral candidates

Nominations in the by-election for the City’s new Mayor will open on Monday 24 November and run until 12 noon Monday 22 December.

At present it is understood there will be more than one candidate indicating an election will take place on 10 February 2015.

Electoral Officer Dr John Annabell says once nominations have closed there will be two ‘Meet the Mayoral Candidates’ meetings where residents can meet and talk with candidates.

“The preliminary residential electoral roll will be open for inspection from the 24 November also to enable residents to amend their enrolment details if need be,” Dr Annabell said. “If residents would like to participate in the by-election they need to be enrolled. Opportunities to update the electoral roll will close at 5pm on 22 December.”

The by-election follows the resignation of Mayor Jono Naylor earlier in the year due to his election to Parliament.

“Voting papers will be delivered from Monday 19th January and candidate’s names will be arranged in random order on every voting paper,” Dr Annabell said. “For example, if there are three eligible voters in a household, all three voting papers will have candidates listed in a different order.”

It is expected that candidates profile statements, including their photographs will be placed on the Council’s website shortly before Christmas.
