Christmas comes early for arts and culture in Wellington
This week the Wellington City Council granted $109,000 to 26 organisations from the arts and culture community in the Capital – with community festivals, WW100 commemorative projects, and theatre and dance groups all benefitting from grants.
The 26 grants were approved by the Council’s Economic Growth and Arts Committee, recipients include the Royal NZ Ballet project commemorating WWI in schools, the Young and Hungry Festival of New Theatre, the Measina Festival will show works by emerging Māori and Pacifica practitioners, and Tawata will be producing their Putahi festival of Māori theatre.
Councillor Ray Ahipene-Mercer, leader of the Arts and Culture Portfolio, says these grants will make Wellington’s already vibrant and creative community really shine bright.
“The fund is designed to support projects that make a positive contribution to the city, and is focused on four main areas: a hothouse for talent; to reinforce Wellington as a region of confident identities; to support active and engaged people; and to encourage our creative future through technology.
“As ever we have a lot of demand for these grants which is a testament to our thriving creative sector,” says Cr Ahipene-Mercer.
The
next round of funding for local arts projects in Wellington
are 28 February 2015 for the Creative Communities Funding
Scheme, and 22 March 2015 for the Arts and Culture fund. The
