Twice daily flights from Auckland to Whitanga welcome news

The announcement of a twice daily air service out of Whitianga Airfield direct to Auckland and a daily flight to Great Barrier Island and Tauranga is welcome news to Council.

From Monday 1 December Sunair will fly 7am daily from Ardmore Airport in Auckland and return at3.30pm. Flights take around 20 minutes and will cost $120 one way for adults and $90 for children aged 16 and under.

Flights from Tauranga and Great Barrier to Whitianga will also be $120 one way. Baggage allowance is 15kg per person and $2 per kg extra.

"This is fantastic news for the Coromandel and we're really looking forward to welcoming more people who may now decide to come and visit our district by using this service," says Mayor Glenn Leach. "I want to thank Sun Air for its commitment to our area. We've already met their team and are working on how we can help promote and market the business through our channels," says the Mayor.

Previously Sunair customers had to have a minimum of two people in order to fly. Now it will fly year-round and never decline a booking.

Children under four years of age count as part of the baggage allowance unless they weigh more than 20kg. Animals must travel in a cage and if dogs exceed 20kg then the equivalent of a child's fare must be paid.

Whitianga airfield is just minutes from the Whitianga town centre and is also the centre point of Coromandel's eastern seaboard, just approx 40 minutes south of Coromandel Town and approx 40 minutes north of Tairua and Pauanui.
