Final sign-off for Main Road Master Plan

Thursday 27 November 2014

Final sign-off for Main Road Master Plan

Christchurch City Council today gave the final sign-off on the Council-led master plan for the recovery and rebuild of Main Road.

Councillor Yani Johanson says, "The adoption of this master plan is another step forward for the recovery of the suburban commercial centres along Main Road - helping get them back on track as thriving, lively destinations and as a focal points for the communities of this area.

"The Ferry Road Master Plan (adopted previously) and the Main Road Master Plan now combine in a holistic way to connect the Central City to the sea in Sumner. The Ferry Road / Main Road Master Plan gives us a coordinated approach to how we spend Council funds. It is a fantastic corridor and has many outstanding natural features that will be accentuated through the Master Plan actions," Councillor Johanson says.

Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board Chairperson Sara Templeton says, "The Master Plan has been three years in the making and the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board is very proud of all the work that has gone into it. It is the end product of what has been a very constructive collaboration between the Council, the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board and the people of the Ferrymead-Sumner communities.

"In June this year, the Main Road Hearing Panel heard many insightful and enthusiastic submissions from residents, business owners and community groups. This has been a useful process that has enabled the Panel to make recommendations for amendments to the Master Plan, which have now been approved.

"We believe these amendments enhance the Plan by building more certainty around key matters raised by the communities such as the relationship with the Christchurch Coastal Pathway, the Estuary Edge Master Plan, SCIRT repair works and the introduction of traffic signals at Redcliffs village.

The amendments bring together and address the entire length of the corridor, which will greatly assist the recovery and rebuild of the Main Road area - we are now really keen to get stuck in and start delivering the Plan," Ms Templeton says.

Urban Design and Regeneration Unit Manager Carolyn Ingles says, "The local community, business owners and community leaders have 'done the hard yards' and we can now see the results of their commitment and vision for their suburban centres with the adoption of the Master Plan.

"Community input, particularly around the need for quality pedestrian environments, adequate on-street car parking in the Redcliffs village centre, cycle parking, and the naturalisation of parks and the water's edge gives us the knowledge we need to deliver a strong and liveable plan for the future of this area," she says.

Printed copies of the final Master Plan will be made available in the New Year.

The Main Road Master Plan forms phase 2 of the Ferry Road / Main Road Master Plan. This is the third Master Plan adopted for the eastern bay suburbs - a series of projects that combine to create a vision and significantly enhanced connection between these suburbs and the Central City. The other two approved master plans in this area are the Ferry Road Master Plan and the Sumner Village Centre Master Plan.

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
