Students celebrate three years of planting
Students at Woodlands Full Primary School will celebrate three years of hard work next Wednesday 3 December, with their final Living Streams planting day on a nearby farm.
Environment Southland land sustainability officer Anastazia Raymond said the students have been part of a partnership with the council and a local dairy farmer, under the Living Streams programme.
The three year project began after the farmer expressed an interest in working with students at the school, as part of an ongoing commitment to improve water quality on his farm.
With some funding and assistance from the Living Streams programme, students and the farmer have been involved in at least two planting events each year alongside the waterway, planting around 600 plants.
Students have formed a planning committee and worked with Ms Raymond to establish the needs of the area and look at which plants grow successfully along the waterway.
The official three year project will come to an end next Wednesday, when the whole school takes part in the final planting day, aiming to plant a further 200 native plants.
The planning committee and farmer have already expressed a desire to continue their joint project independently of the programme and are currently planning for the future.
