Worm composting workshop for Rotorua locals

2 December 2014

Worm composting workshop for Rotorua locals

Rotorua Lakes Council (RLC) is giving locals the opportunity to attend a worm composting workshop this weekend in one of its final sustainability events for the year.

RLC sustainability advisor, Monica Quirke, said worm farming is an ideal way to redirect compostable waste from the landfill.

“For many households compostable waste makes up a large proportion of their weekly rubbish bags. Our council supports initiatives that help the community reduce waste that would otherwise go into the landfill, and we continue to promote alternative solutions.

“Worms are very easy to work with and the commercially produced bins, which participants will receive with their worms, are ideal for smaller residential gardens. Worm composting with their worm juice and worm castings benefits, are a great way to naturally fertilise your garden.”

The cost to attend the workshop is just $30 thanks to a Bay of Regional Council Waste Resources Advisory Group grant, and support from Keep Rotorua Beautiful and Progress Ngongotaha.

The venue is the Ngongotaha Community Hall on 6 December and the workshop commences at 12.30pm. It is expected to finish between 3.30 and 4pm.

Rotorua Lakes Council’s worm composting workshop is limited to 70 households, with each participant taking home a worm farm, compost and worms. Bookings and payment are required prior to the day, and can be made at the council’s Customer Centre or by calling 07 348 4199.
