The Mission gears up to raise $40,000 on Friday

On Friday December 5, the Wellington City Missions annual „Street Day Appeal will see around 450 volunteers stationed at 74 sites throughout the Greater Wellington region.

Locations include Wellington City and suburbs, Wellington Airport, Johnsonville, Porirua, Petone and Lower Hutt. Collectors will be out at most sites between 7am and 6-7pm.

Collectors will be dressed in distinctive red vests and equipped with collection buckets and stickers. They will also be handing out “Santa Slabs” chocolates to would-be donors – which have been generously donated by local superstar chocolate manufacturer, and key supporter of The Missions Christmas Star Appeal, Whittakers.

To help combat the growing trend of a “cashless society”, The Mission will be trialling their six new „Donation Stations that, thanks to the kind support of EFTPOS New Zealand, are equipped with the latest Verifone eftpos machines.

Through the goodwill of volunteers, and the strong increase in collector numbers, The Mission has been able to increase their presence in Greater Wellington on the day – with the number of collection sites up by 54% from last year.

The Mission has been delighted with the enthusiastic volunteer response from individuals, families, businesses organisations and parishes. Wellington City Mission Chief Executive Officer Michelle Branney says: “The Mission helps those most in need in Greater Wellington, Porirua and the Hutt Valley at little or no cost to them. The individuals and families that access our services simply cant afford to pay us for our help. The Street Day Appeal is a way for Wellingtonians to back the work of The Mission by donating whatever they can afford.”

The Mission aims to raise $40,000, with every contribution gratefully received - enabling it to keep its services going for several months. The Street Day is a fitting way for caring people living in Greater Wellington to support a local cause and support those in their community who most need The Missions assistance.
