Financial Boost to Community Environment Projects
Financial Boost to Community Environment Projects
At
last week’s Wellington City Council Environment Committee
meeting, 8 Our Living City Fund grants totalling $22,770
were approved.
Councillor Helene Ritchie, Environment Portfolio leader says that Our Living City Fund is designed to improve Wellingtonians quality of life.
“Only by strengthening urban nature connections and building economic opportunities for a healthy environment do we create a healthy, liveable city where Wellingtonians want to continue to live”.
Grants ranging from providing financial support to set up a local community garden to supporting educating children on growing and preparing fresh food have been made out of this Fund.
A grant of $12,000 has been made to the Garden to Table Trust who teach food literacy to children. The Trust teaches children to make healthy food choices, and how to garden and cook by having a dedicated garden and cooking space at their school.
Sarah Adams, Wellington City Council Community Advisor says, “We are excited that this grant will enable the national Garden to Table programme to work in four schools across Wellington city”.
“This grant will enable a school in each of the Wellington wards to be supported with a coordinator to teach kids how to grow their own food”, she says.
Grants
are made to community initiatives and projects that grow
Wellington’s natural capital, reduce our environmental
impact, and provide opportunities for community enjoyment of
Wellington’s natural environment.
The next round of funding for Our Living City Fund is 24 March 2015.
