One week to have a say on sports hub

Christchurch residents have one week left to give their views on the proposed sports hub at Nga Puna Wai, with consultation closing at 5pm on Friday 12 December.

“We’ve had an extra-long consultation period of two months, and we’ve received almost 100 submissions so far,” says John Filsell, Recreation and Sports Unit Manager with the Christchurch City Council.

“Residents and organisations need the opportunity to comment on both the sports hub proposal and the changes to the Canterbury Agricultural Park Management Plan that would be necessary to make it happen, so we’ve opted for a full-scale consultation process.”

Nga Puna Wai proposes to combine facilities for a number of sporting disciplines, including an athletics track, hockey turfs, indoor and outdoor tennis courts and sports fields – on a 32-hectare area of Nga Puna Wai, a reserve currently used mainly for livestock grazing and public recreation.

“We’ve had plenty of positive feedback from sports groups around the city and there’s a lot of enthusiasm for the project, but we need to consider every possible view,” Mr Filsell says. “We have hearings scheduled for the end of January 2015, where submissions will be carefully considered by a Hearings Panel made up of Councillors, and the full Council will decide whether Nga Puna Wai gets the go-ahead later in 2015.”

Submissions can be made in a number of different ways – online at www.ccc.govt.nz/HaveYourSay, emailing a submission and any attachments to ngapunawai@ccc.govt.nz, by mail or by hand delivery to the Civic Offices at 53 Hereford Street.
