Wayne Guppy appointed to chair WRS

The Wellington Regional Strategy is to be chaired by Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy.

Upper Hutt, 5 December 2014 — Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy has been appointed chair of the Wellington Regional Strategy under the new Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA) arrangement. The appointment was made via vote at the WRS meeting held yesterday.

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown was elected deputy chair.

WREDA is the recently organised and regionally collaborative approach to economic development in the Wellington Region. It combines the functions and organisations of Positively Wellington Tourism, Positively Wellington Venues, Major Events, Destination Wellington, Grow Wellington, and the Wellington Regional Strategy under one umbrella.

“Setting up the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency has been a huge step forward for the region,” says Mayor Guppy. “After a considerable time of planning, we are now going to be able to move forward with an increased level of cooperation, efficiency, and strategic vision. I am looking forward to serving as Chair of the Regional Strategy board as we work together to build on top of what we have already accomplished through collaboration and leveraging each other’s strengths. There are huge opportunities and potential for the region and I am confident that collaboration and sound leadership is the key to our collective success.”
