Summer Reading Challenge

Catch The Trickster with Upper Hutt’s Super Summer Reading Challenge

Keep your child reading and entertained this summer with Upper Hutt City Library’s Summer Reading Challenge.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 10 DEC 2014—Upper Hutt City Library has six weeks of action packed FREE events and challenges for children aged between 5 and12.

The programme, designed especially for the Library by Massey University students, has an overarching theme based around a villain called The Trickster.

The Trickster has stolen the prizes that were purchased for the programme. Children will be given the opportunity to actively participate in the capture of this villain and be on a jury in a mock court case to bring the Trickster to justice.

The Upper Hutt City Library offers the Summer Reading Challenge in order to keep children reading so that they can maintain or even increase their reading level over the summer holidays. Research shows that children who do not read over the holidays often experience reading setback.

There are over 30 events and challenges offered over the six weeks, including storytelling, drama, reading activities, craft, gymnastics, special effects make-up, and much more. The programme culminates in a huge party with games, food, and entertainment, along with an opportunity to win prizes once the Trickster has been apprehended and the prizes returned.

“This programme provides a unique opportunity for children to continue their reading, whilst also having the opportunity to participate in some exciting activities,” says Community Programmes Co-ordinator, Jane Cherry. “Even if your family will be away over the holidays, the Super Summer reading challenge also includes plenty of activities that can be completed when away from Upper Hutt.”

This programme is free but registrations are required. Register in person at the Upper Hutt Central Library or online at www.upperhuttlibrary.co.nz/Summer-Reading-Challenge. Children can pick up their Hero Pack from the Library from 15 December.
