Police respond to bomb threat at kindergarten

"Police respond to bomb threat at kindergarten"

Police were alerted to a bomb threat by staff at Redwood kindergarten in Christchurch shortly before 9am this morning when they found a threatening note.

Police established a cordon around the address which had been evacuated by kindergarten staff. While Police worked inside the cordon, staff from the kindergarten looked after and reassured children and their parents.

A Canterbury Police Specialist Search Dog and Handler started their search of the property and surrounds at approximately 9.30am.

At approximately 10am this morning Police confirmed that no current threat had been located at the property. The Redwood kindergarten has robust procedures in place should such an event occur and as a result the facility will remain closed today.

Christchurch Metro Commander, Detective Superintendent Peter Read says “Police take all such threats seriously however in this case it appears this may have been a childish prank that has not only wasted Police resources but also disrupted the routines of children and care givers. We encourage anyone who can provide any information about this threat to contact Police. Police investigations into this incident are continuing and a small number of items retrieved from the property will undergo forensic examination.”

Anyone who notices any suspicious activity near the kindergarten is asked to contact Police on 03 363 7400 or call 111 in an emergency.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
