Coromandel Weather update

Coromandel Weather update

The weather that ripped down the North Island over the weekend was gentle in comparison to the series of storms we experienced in winter.

Compared to winter storms with rainfall of up to 50mm per hour, this weekend's rain was predicted at half that and, in practice, it peaked at about 10mm per hour at the Pinnacles. However, as the ranges drained off over night, low-lying streams rose, causing the few patches of flooding encountered by residents heading off to work this morning.

A few roads from Hot Water Beach up to Whenuakite were only passable by 4WD or down to one lane. The Kauaeranga Visitor Centre closed on Sunday because of flooding on the fords but they are passable again today. The only real road blocks were caused by trees.

Power outages caused the majority of the discomfort over the weekend with power still off this morning in Ruamahunga Bay, Te Puru and Waiomu (estimated to be back on by midday).

The best updates came through our Facebook page as residents posted personal real-time updates from around the Coromandel.
